N.W.A (compton)

Niggaz With Attitude (N.W.A.) est un groupe de hip hop afro-américain, originaire des banlieues de Los Angeles, qui a popularisé le style gangsta rap.

Leur album à succès, Straight Outta Compton (1989), est devenu culte dans le milieu underground, en raison notamment de ses paroles d'une rare violence, spécialement le tube Fuck Tha Police. Le FBI envoya d'ailleurs une lettre d'avertissement au label du groupe (Ruthless records) et à la maison de disque associée (Priority Records), pour demander que le groupe surveille la teneur de ses textes. En réalité, la lettre du FBI, très médiatisée, n'aura eu pour effet que d'accroître un peu plus la notoriété du groupe.

N.W.A. sortit en 1990 l'album 100 Miles and Runnin', puis en 1991 l'album Efil4zaggin (au dos duquel figurait l'inscription « Niggaz 4 Life »), sur lesquels Dr. Dre (alors producteur du groupe) créa des ambiances sonores à la fois denses et « funky » (qui laissaient présager son son innovant appelé G-Funk), associées au textes d'Eazy-E, teintés d'humour, et à ceux d'Ice Cube (présent que dans les deux premiers opus du groupe), beaucoup plus véhéments et traitant de problèmes sociaux. N.W.A. se maintient ainsi au sommet des meilleures ventes d'albums de rap.

Après la séparation du groupe, Dr. Dre connut une carrière solo marquée par le succès, aussi bien dans le rôle de rappeur que dans celui de producteur (il a notamment produit Snoop Doggy Dogg et Eminem). Ice Cube connut le succès en tant que rappeur et, dans une moindre mesure, en tant qu'acteur. Eazy-E, quant à lui, décéda des suites du SIDA.
